xChange with Mark Fabian

In our July 9th xChange we’ll explore with Mark Fabian how we can rethink happiness and find fulfilment through our work and communities.

Mark is the author of Beyond Happy: How We Can Rethink Happiness and Find Fulfilment.

Manda Scott, best selling novelist, host of the Accidental Gods podcast and previous xChange guest, described Beyond Happy saying, 'Evolution has wired us to keep happiness just out of reach, leaving us stuck on a treadmill, striving and striving and striving to be happy...And instead of doing that, or striving to escape it, we should focus on making the treadmill a place we want to be. Finding this well-being begins with listening to our emotions, discovering intrinsic motivation, and pursuing our authentic values. And the whole of this book tells us how to do this.'

Mark is associate professor of public policy at the University of Warwick. He is also an affiliate researcher at the Bennett Institute for Public Policy at Cambridge University, and an associate at the Institute for Social Change at the University of Tasmania. He was previously a Fulbright Scholar at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC.

Fabian studies 'wellbeing' from an interdisciplinary perspective with an emphasis on public policy issues. He has written on what wellbeing is, how it can be measured, how it can inform public policy, and how it should be studied. His work has appeared in top journals across multiple fields including Perspectives on Psychological Science, Journal of European Public Policy, European Journal for Philosophy of Science, Fiscal Studies, and Journal of Happiness Studies. His research employs mixed methods and he has published philosophical, quantitative, and qualitative papers.

Mark is the host of ePODstemology, a podcast where young researchers showcase their work.
