Can marketing save the planet? with Gemma Butler and Michelle Carvill

In our February xChange Caroline Taylor, OBE, former CMO of IBM Global Markets, interviewed Gemma Butler and Michelle Carvill to explore some of the most high profile environmental and sustainability challenges facing businesses and the most practical solutions from the world of marketing.

We covered ideas from their new book Can Marketing Save the Planet?: 101 Practical Ways to Use Sustainable Marketing as a Force for Good and the COM1 - Conference of Marketing, which they are organising for March 14th in London.

The discussion covered everything from our role in narrating a better pathway to sustainability, to shifting how we live, achieving environmental and social growth and recognising Earth a key stakeholder.

Gemma and Michelle also emphasized how important it is for marketers to keep learning, network internally and find ways to build momentum within their oganisations. They gave examples such as Saleforce, whose ‘Earthforce’ started with two employees and has risen to 15,000 members, and Autotrader, with 80% of its staff now Carbon Literate.

In addition to writing Can Marketing Save the Planet?, Gemma and Michelle are also hosts of the podcast by the same name and authors of Sustainable Marketing: How to Drive Profits with Purpose.

Gemma is also the former Marketing Director of the CIM and a sustainable marketing trainer, guest lecturer and an ideas-driven leader.

Michelle is also a sustainable marketing champion, agency founder, consultant, speaker and has written six books.
