Social purpose in enterprise with Polly Mackenzie

In our March xChange Paul Skinner, founder of MarketingKind, interviewed Polly Mackenzie, Chief Social Purpose Officer at University of the Arts London, to explore how we can mainstream social purpose in enterprise.

We discussed everything from why Polly took on her current role, to how we might rethink free markets, taxes and regulation, the challenges of embedding values throughout a large organisation, how the creative industries are needed more than ever in our crisis-prone world and the need for a new national story in the UK.

Polly shared what it is like working with Peter Mandelson on the How to Win an Election podcast and why she is not planning to run for elected office herself.

Many of our previous guests and members get a mention in this discussion including Rory Sutherland, Jon Alexander, Andy Burnham, Gaia Vince and the wellbeing work of Pro Bono Economics.

Participants commented:

“Purpose, Value and Vision are defining factors in any business's success. Polly's experience and insights from her current role at UAL, Demos and Policy Innovation in Government, have given me hope that social purpose is on a pathway to becoming mainstream.”

“Thought provoking and well said.”

“Really good way to end your day…engaging in a positive conversation and hopeful direction for purposefulness being ingrained in businesses.”
